Valyndiar is a deep and complex character. He in not what one thinks of the typical dark wizard. If there was any comparison to be made about Val it would be to Severus Snape. In the depth of his personality and what he does. Reading the ABC's of Valyndiar will help in understanding him

He is deeply in need of friends. He would have came to Hogwarts as a transfer from Dramstraung during his 5th year. So he would have not known anyone during that time. He's now a seventh year, so one would assume he keeps his circle of friends small and tight.
He most certainly would have enemies as he makes it no secret he is the grandson of Dolohov and had contact with Karkaroff as a young boy. He is a vicious dueler and fiercely protective of those close to him. There is not price that can buy his loyalty. You are either with him or you are in his way as he sees it.
Love interest. This character would ideally be a girl from a pure blood household with connections to dark wizarding families. Either a direct descendant or extended. IE Granddaughter, Niece, 2nd cousins etc. This character does not have to be, but lets face it. She is going to have to be a pure blood with the family credentials and papers for his family to even consider introducing him to her. They are fiercely proud of their boy!
