Nikolai tried to keep his eyes open, although it simply wasn’t working. In the sparse classroom - it seemed the majority of students were avoiding Muggle Studies like the plague - the pupils seated around him were all either focusing on their work, or chatting quietly to their friends seated nearby. However, the Hufflepuff didn’t have anyone to socialise with - but nor could he focus on the set work. The tightly printed text swam in front of his eyes, and was near impossible for him to decipher... there was no way that he’d be able to take any of the information in the book in when he was this tired. He hadn’t even stayed up that late the night before: in fact, he’d gone to bed early in order to make sure he’d get proper rest. It didn’t seem to have worked, though.
Looking around at the pupils around him, it was quickly evident that no-one was going to pay him any attention. After all, the Russian had always been a bit of an outcast when it came to friends. Slowly, an idea formed in his head; despite the fact that he knew he should really be focusing on his lessons more intently, one little slip-up couldn’t hurt. Silently, he closed the heavy text and slid in further up the desk. One last survey of the room confirmed his belief that no-one cared about what he was up to - then again, he could have guessed that. Folding his arms on the desk, Nikolai gently placed his head on top of them. Closing his eyes, the initial guilt he felt for what he was going to do faded as drowsiness swept over him; it wasn’t long until he fell asleep, his breathing becoming deeper as he drifted off.

That lesson hadn't gone too badly, Brent believed. Muggle Studies was probably his strongest subject since he was muggleborn; it was kind of nice to teach things he was entirely familiar with for once. Well, not that he was doing a lot of teaching. Brent had merely told the kids about the work that had been set for them and then left them too it while he lounged on the chair at the front of the desks. It was a small class of seventh years that were easy to control, they didn't need constant supervision like the younger groups. Eventually, Brent dismissed them, letting them go off to enjoy their evenings since this was the last lesson of the day but one student had stayed behind - the poor guy was asleep. It was the cute little Russian, he thought. There would be no harm in teasing him a bit.
He strutted over and sat on the edge of the boy's desk before placing a hand on his upper-arm and giving it a gentle-ish shake. "Wakey, wakey, sleepyhead~" Brent twisted around a bit so his face was hovering in front of the male's head, ensuring he'd be heard. Brent thought he'd sacrifice some of his evening home to sit with Mr Berkov during his detention. Oh yes, how could he resist issuing such a punishment in this situation?

Nikolai had a rather enjoyable time sleeping. His little snooze had been practically undisturbed since the class was so quiet. It had been a while since he'd been able to have a proper rest, so it was a relief that he'd managed it - despite the fact that yes, it had been in class. It hadn't been his intention to sleep all lesson, but it happened nonetheless; in fact, he probably would have stayed asleep for longer if he hadn't had a (rather nice, quiet) awakening.
Since Nikki's teacher didn't seem to be that annoyed with him for sleeping, he took his time in waking up. Leaving his eyes closed, he involuntarily released a little whine as the feeling came back into his limbs. Lifting his head slightly, he blinked blearily at him, rubbing his eyes. "...Huh?" As the Hufflepuff gained more awareness of his surroundings - and how close his tutor's face was to his own, purposeful or not - a slight, embarrassed blush rose to his cheeks. No matter how the situation was looked at, he was bound to get in trouble for this one. Scooting backwards in his chair a little, the Russian attempted to stammer out an apology. "I-I so sorry, Professor McKinney!" Wincing slightly at himself, Nikolai hoped that he was understandable. It wasn't his fault that his accent came through a lot more when he was nervous.

Sometimes you witnessed things that were so adorable that you literally couldn't contain your emotions towards it. This was one of those times, for Brent. His chest hurt with the pain of it and he didn't hold back from making a small, cooing noise over the seventh year. Brent bit his lip, a grin lighting up his face - which was a rare sight. That accent was even more adorable. Brent sat up straight but made sure to lean more in the student's direction. "Don't be sorry, cutie." Brent replied, his voice quiet and low. He was aiming to make him blush more.
He got up and turned around to grab a chair, trying to stop himself from smirking as he did so. Brent placed the chair besides Berkov and sat down next to him, leaving very little space between the two of them. "In fact, I'm sorry to say you're now in detention with me." he sighed heavily, letting his hand roam to the Hufflepuff's upper-thigh and giving it a gentle squeeze. Brent was terrible. Sure, this guy was cute - but not his type. Not to mention the student-teacher boundaries issue. This was purely for Brent's own, selfish amusement.

The sight of his teacher grinning was't something that Nikolai could say that he saw every day. From what he'd heard about this guy - and what he could base on his own experriences - Mr McKinney never, ever smiled. It made the Russian feel special, to make the tutor with the stone face happy, and he responded with a small, hesitant smile of his own. The Hufflepuff had to admit, these circumstances were rather strange - after all, most teachers wouldn't have been that content to discover one of their students sleeping in the back of the class - but this professor didn't seem to mind at all. In fact... he was telling him not to apologise, complimenting him: calling him cutie. Cutie. Nikki wasn't entirely sure how appropriate that was in the classroom, but he wasn't about to complain.
"D-detention?" the teen looked at the floor; he didn't know what he'd been expecting, but he'd thought... he'd thought that judging how nice the professor had been previously that he'd get off a bit lighter than that. Still, rules are rules, he supposed. In his thoughts, Nikolai hadn't realised where the other man's hand had wandered; his blush deepened and his smile faltered for a second, but quickly recovered. There was bound to be some sensible explanation for this. "Oh. O-okay, sir."

God, Berkov (Or, Nikki? That was his name right?) was like some innocent poodle pup. He must've thought, since Brent wasn't being a grump for once, that he would get away with this. Nuh-uh, that wasn't how he worked. But, Brent was pleased to see that his smile was returned and the boy's face grew redder. Awesome. Things were going rather well. What exactly this detention was going to involve yet, Brent had yet to decide. It depended on how cruel he would dare to act towards the Hufflepuff.
Brent took his hand back and fiddled with his scarf, thinking. It was only a few short moments before he had something. The professor could only hope Nikki hadn't paid any notice to the mischievous glint in his dark eyes. "You can help me clean up the broom cupboard. It's a bit of a mess." Brent had the 'slut voice' on. The slow, quiet, almost whiny tone that was associated with those sorts of whorish men or women that were after something. It came naturally to him.
He got to his feet and used his knee to push the chair under the desk, even if it was in the wrong place. He wasn't wasting time or energy with putting it back. "Well, get a move on then, Mr Berkov." Brent raised a brow before making his way towards the door - he wasn't going to wait for the student, he could catch up easily. Hopefully it hadn't occurred to the boy that Brent could get this job done by himself if he used magic but, pfft, whatever. This was a detention after all.

Honestly, it should have been rather obvious that Nikolai was going to be punished for what he'd done. Why he'd ever thought any different was stupid - he knew what was coming. He'd be assigned an essay to write, or be given quills to sharpen or even just told to sit there for an hour or so. A boring task, designed to convince students to never slack again; generally, it was a strong deterrent. Still, the Hufflepuff looked at his teacher with a slight yearning - he knew that if he was given such a dull task, he'd be likely to fall asleep again and get in even more trouble. So when it was announced (after much deliberation) that he'd be helping to clear out the broom cupboard, a wave of relief washed over the teen. Cleaning... that was something he could do. He quite enjoyed the activity, and it was a bonus that it involved movement rather than simply revolving around sitting down.
In his relief, Nikki hadn't noticed that the professor had stood up, and was waiting for him next to the door which he presumed led to the broom cupboard in question. Looking at the teacher's arched brow, it was obvious that he really didn't want to annoy this man any more. Standing up quickly, Nikolai nearly managed to push his chair over in the process - though he caught it just in time. Pushing the chair under the table, he then marched over to the tutor, his cheeks burning in embarrassment as he started at the floor. "Sorry, sir." The Russian winced at himself: hadn't he just been told not to apologise?

Behind him, Brent heard the cluttering of furniture that meant Nikki was finally moving. He rolled his eyes at the apology but didn't comment on it. He wasn't getting tired of the awkward cuteness of the Russian yet, that seemed kind of impossible. When the Hufflepuff reached him, Brent grabbed him by the arm, dragging him along with him to make sure he kept up the pace. It didn't take long to reach the broom cupboard - it was hardly far away.
He opened the door and the gave Nikki a gentle shove so he went in first and then followed after him before closing it. It was very dimly lit; the only light was provided by the corridor, it could pass through the gaps between the crappy door and the walls. It meant that he didn't have a clear view of the student's features but could still make out where he was. If anything, in the gloomy cupboard he looked something like a ghost. As for the brooms, they were a lot harder to see and were merely a cluttered mess on the floor of the tiny area. There was little room for personal space, and that was Brent's purpose for taking the boy here.
They were facing each other but Brent knew his smirk wouldn't be visible. He placed a hand on the Hufflepuff's shoulder. "We just need to stack them up against the wall. Nothing complicated." the professor said, softly. There was barely a couple of inches between them. Brent had to struggle with holding back his laughter. He knew he was being a dick.

Judging by the way Professor McKinney didn't respond to his apology, he wasn't overly impressed. Nikolai had to fight the urge to say sorry yet again, but a) he didn't really have anything to apologise for and b) it probably wouldn't have changed the situation anyway. As he was looking down at the floor of the classroom, it came as a surprise when he was dragged toward the cupboard without a single note of warning beforehand, and practically thrown into the small space. As the teen regained his balance, he could hear the professor walk in behind him and close the door; the already-small area suddenly became rather claustrophobic - not to mention that the shadows initially in the room were now shut in, rather than spilling out into the corridor outside. Beforehand, he hadn't had time to realise that the room was so dingy and dark - now that he had, there was nothing he could do about it. There was absolutely nowhere for him to run.
For those who were familiar with Nikolai and his peculiar ways, it was common knowledge that he had a fear of the dark. It had started when he was around five years old, and had never stopped - he was aware that the majority of children went through it, but for him... it was a phobia. It was almost as if all the negative thoughts that he hid came back to haunt him when he was shrouded in darkness. It was true, he'd been getting better at dealing with it... and it was also a fact that there were a few glimmers of light that shot through (although they didn't make much of an impact) - but going from a light-filled room to a small, tight space filled with blackness took him back to the raw fear he had experienced as a much younger child. Desperate not to show his teacher any signs of weakness, Nikki tried to focus on something else - however, it was so overwhelming, and he let out a quiet whimper. Damn.
He'd tuned out to anything that his teacher might have said by this point, although the touching of his shoulder managed to break through the unease Nikki felt. He couldn't even see the professor, the room was so shrouded in darkness, which only made the experience even more disconcerting. Shrugging the man's hand off, he stumbled backward, although only succeeded in knocking something over and causing even more of a mess. Dammit, I'm sorry, I just... Nikolai tried to think up a reasonable explanation why he needed to escape, but there was none. Wrapping his arms around his torso, the Hufflepuff ducked as far into a corner as he could. "Let me out. Please, let me out." His voice came out as a whisper - and was distorted by the strong Russian accent that had crept back into his speech - but it was perfectly audible in the enclosed space nevertheless.

Brent was disappointed. Nikolai was more scared than awkward, and that wasn't going to work at all. The professor knew that he could be a bit of a bully from time to time but, this was a student, and he didn't want to torment him any further. You see, you had to know when was the right time to stop. A lot of the time Brent left it a little too late. The important thing was that he was stopping though, correct? His shoulders slumped slightly in defeat. Staying in some dingy broom cupboard with a skittery, terrified boy wasn't what he'd been aiming for.
He opened up the cupboard again, squinting as his vision adjusted to the drastic change in lighting. Brent grabbed a hold of the Hufflepuff's wrist and tugged him out. "Happy now?" Brent had initially meant to say that teasingly but, after taking a look at the Russian and realising what a state he was in, his voice ended up more hesitant and concerned. Wow, he was starting to feel bad now. Brent? Feel bad? He felt bad for feeling bad - it wasn't a normal thing for him and he'd much rather avoid it altogether whenever possible to avoid emotional complications.
